ADM EXPANDS CARDIOAID PHYTOSTEROLS AND PHYTOSTEROL ESTERS
PORTFOLIO
ADM Natural Health and Nutrition has introduced
three new products to its CardioAid™ brand of phytosterols
and phytosterol esters. The latest additions, CardioAid-GA
phytosterol esters, CardioAid-M and CardioAid-WD
phytosterols are powder products specially formulated for
use in low-fat, fat-free or dry applications where water
dispersibility is required. These provide the
cholesterol-reducing benefits of plant sterols in healthier
low-fat food formulations and supplements.
CardioAid-GA phytosterol esters is an easy-to-handle,
off-white to tan granular powder with bland colour and taste
allowing its use in delicately flavoured and colour
sensitive foods. Examples include liquid or powder forms of
low-fat or fat-free dairy-type or soya beverages, fermented
soya or dairy products, or salad dressings. CardioAid-M
phytosterols, an off-white ultra-fine powder, can be used in
similar applications to CardioAid-GA and is additionally
appropriate for use in food supplements.
CardioAid-WD, a light-coloured powder with a slight odour
and taste, is suitable for inclusion in foods such as
low-fat or fat-free dairy applications (either in powder or
liquid form), beverage whiteners and dairy beverage powders
for hot drinks. As CardioAid-WD contains phytosterols rather
than phytosterol esters and has good handling properties, it
may also be added to food supplements.
These three new products complement the existing ADM
CardioAid family which includes CardioAid-S phytosterol
esters and CardioAid phytosterols. CardioAid-S phytosterol
esters can be added to margarines, milk-type products,
non-dairy soya products, cheese analogues and fat containing
salad dressings. CardioAid phytosterols is mainly used in
food supplements.
ADM’s CardioAid phytosterols and phytosterol esters have
been approved for use in the European Union in a range of
food and beverage products.1 In the United States, official
recognition of the cholesterol reducing properties of plant
sterols and plant sterol esters2 now means that complying
products may carry a FDA-approved health claim.3
